Photophysics, Photobiology and Photochemistry

This web site provides a brief introduction to the current research interests of Peter R. Ogilby and his group.  The projects are interdisciplinary, but are most readily characterized under the heading of Photophysics, Photobiology and Photochemistry (P3).

Space- and time-resolved laser-based optical methods are the foundation of our P3 program.  We are particularly interested in photo-induced processes that involve molecular oxygen, specifically singlet oxygen.  This reactive oxygen species not only provides a wonderful model for studies of fundamental molecular phenomena (e.g., ways to perturb forbidden electronic transitions), but also is a key intermediate in mechanisms of cell signaling that result in both cell death (e.g., apoptosis) and cell stimulation (e.g., promoted mitosis).

Work in the P3 program should appeal to those with interests in the following areas: (1) optics and microscopes, including super-resolution microscopes to monitor dynamic photo-initiated events in single cell experiments, (2) the creation and use of genetically-engineered proteins that facilitate mechanistic studies of singlet-oxygen-mediated signaling in mammalian cells, (3) fundamental photophysical studies of linear and nonlinear electronic transitions in condensed phases, (4) electrophysiological measurements to monitor photo-induced processes in neurons, and (5) syntheses, characterization and implementation of fluorescent probes for reactive oxygen species.
