2026.08.18 | A tusk with a twist
Former postdoc in the group Adrián Rodríguez-Palomo, Professor Henrik Birkedal and colleagues just published a research paper in Nature Communications revealing the hierarchical structure of the narwhal tusk from its building blocks up to the majestic protruding tooth!
Using a plethora of techniques spanning from the lab to several synchrotron facilities, the international team discovered that the twisted helix of the tusk and the building blocks have opposite chirality!
The paper have had big impact already and has been picked up by both national and international media!
