New textbook on atmospheric clouds

Assistant Professor Fabian Mahrt, research group leader at the Center for Chemistry of Clouds (C3), has published a new textbook on atmospheric clouds together with Ulrike Lohmann from ETH Zurich. The book is published by Cambridge University Press.

An Introduction to Clouds introduces different cloud types and their roles in the Earth's climate system, including the energy budget and hydrological cycle. The textbook explains the microphysical processes that govern cloud droplet formation, ice crystal growth, and precipitation, while also examining the influence of atmospheric dynamics and aerosol particles on cloud development, properties and impacts.

Focused on clouds, the textbook covers a range of topics in atmospheric science, including thermodynamics, radiation, storms, and climate intervention. Each chapter is accompanied by supplementary problem sets and multiple-choice questions to support teaching and self-study.

Combining mathematical treatment with intuitive explanations, the book requires relatively little prior knowledge and is therefore well suited for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in atmospheric science and related disciplines. At the Department of Chemistry, it will be used as part of the Atmospheric Chemistry II course alongside other course literature.
